She breathes in the sultry, humid air full of night-smells and the sounds of a city kicking back after the bustle of yet another busy day. She marvels at the silent sky, dark and starless over the quiet city blocks.
Somewhere in the depths of her heart, an old loneliness re-emerges. A feeling she never outgrew no matter how many times she has locked it away in some spare room of her mind and feigned youthful enthusiasm.
She sighs, familiar to the scent of what will be yet another sleepless night.
For a moment in time she slips into her own thoughts again. She is young and old all at once, looking for a familiar place to stow away her care-worn heart. Un-disturbed by the noise in another part of the house, she looks out her window, feeling as if she was watching someone else's dream.
A dream in which time speeds on and people change unrecognizably, leaving her behind, clinging on to wistful rememberings of how things used to be.
A dream which could easily fit the description of a nightmare, where every twist of fate was more cruel than the first. But a dream it must be, for she still smiles and laughs, and despite everything that has happened to her, she still has the heart to love.
